    COMAH Overview

The COMAH Regulations (Control Of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999 (COMAH)) came into force on 1 April 1999 as a result of the EU Seveso Directive. They were significantly amended by the COMAH Amendment Regulations 2005, when the rules were tightened on some hazardous substances and quantities.

The main aim of the regulations is to prevent, control and mitigate the effects of accidents involving chemicals that could cause serious harm to people and/or the environment. Typical types of Major Accidents that are covered by COMAH include fires, explosions, toxic gas releases, and leaks of hazardous substances to rivers and land.
