2005

December 2005: Our Low Impact chemical manufacturers received their PPC permit, just 8 weeks after submission. 
Helped set up a REACH market research project to assess chemical company awareness of the implications for their businesses.

November 2005: Janet Murfin gave a talk on “COMAH and IPPC update” at the Chemical Engineering North Exhibition on 16th November at Harrogate - details of presentation here.

September 2005: Low Impact Application for chemical manufacturer in West Yorkshire submitted to EA.  Application form, H1 environmental assessment, H7 application site report, and a demonstration of why the site is low impact were all compiled.  Statutory advertising has been completed, and application is currently with the EA’s SPG (Special Permitting Group).

August 2005: Contaminated Land desktop study for planning application, extension to house built within the curtilage of a historic gunpowder mill in Argyll.  Accepted by Local Authority; no need for further investigation.

June & July 2005: Training course: Understanding Your Site Environment Better, funded via LSC (70% support), is a bespoke course designed to help Environment specialists get to grips with the environmental risks to land and water on their site.  Run on your site as a one-to-one or in small groups, this will help you understand the likely impact of historic site operations, what the risks could be from current operations, and how future incidents could create liability for contaminated land, including measures to prevent this happening.

May 2005
: Champagne winner! On Wednesday 25th May, Janet Murfin won a bottle of champagne at ET 2005 on the Biogenie stand for the most accurate estimate of the amount of “contamination” to be cleaned up in a jar of solid particles. Many thanks to Biogenie, especially Georges (who will be based in the UK office this summer). Biogenie are a remediation company who specialise in bioremediation, see their site www.biogenie-env.com.

April 2005: successfully completed GBSO chemical club project, delivering waste minimisation consultancy to chemical SMEs in Yorkshire.  For details, see chemicals club page.

March 2005: Successful discussions with EA to ensure chemical formulator is correctly identified as a non-PPC site, and removed from their existing IPPC obligations as well.

March 2005: Contaminated Land phase 1 report and sampling for lead contamination, engineering company in West Yorkshire.
